Timeline of Australia
- 1606: First Europeans (Dutch) to sail to Australia. They were attacked by the Aborigines and left.
- 1770: Sailors made a map of Eastern Australia and Tasmania.
- 1788: British prisoners settled in Australia.
- 1861: Government officials created boundaries for the colonies that are still in place today.
- 1868: The British transported prisoners to Australia until this year.
- 1901: On January 1 of this year the Commonwealth of Australia was established.
- 1927: Melbourne served as the national capital until Canberra was completed in this year.
- 1967: Australia's federal government began to pass legislation (laws) to help the Aborigines. Aboriginal farmers began demanding equal pay and the right to own land.
- 1986: The Australia Act severed all legal ties with the British Empire. Australia is a parliamentary democracy (constitutional monarchy) with Elizabeth the second as queen
- 1999: 55% of voters rejected (voted no to) the idea of becoming an independent republic.
